Catechumenate Journal

Since the time of the early church, the faithful have gathered to shepherd new friends into the faith. We continue this process at St. Mark's with our catechumenate program. This journal highlights our activities as we journey toward Easter.

Barbecue & Catechumenate Celebration

The Feast of Pentecost and the Feast of Dedication
Sunday, May 27
11:30 am

All are invited to come and celebrate with our catechumens the completion of the 2011 - 2012 year process with a barbecue and potluck on the Parish Playground. St. Mark's will supply the meat for grilling and the drinks; all are encouraged to bring a dish to share.

Sunday, May 27 is Pentecost Day, and is also the Sunday when we will celebrate our Feast of Dedication, or the anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of our church. It is therefore fitting that we celebrate with those who have been baptized, confirmed, received or renewed in the faith this past year.

St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church

A special mass will be celebrated by the bishop for those wishing to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church on Sunday, May 20. Some of our catechumens will be confirmed and received at this mass, and we hope that many from St. Mark's will come to support them. All of the Honolulu Episcopal churches will be participating in this celebratory occasion.

St. Elizabeth's is located at 720 North King Street in Honolulu, just Ewa of Chinatown.

Easter Baptisms

During the season of Lent the church refrains from celebrating baptisms. This is because Easter is the great baptismal season of the church year. One of the themes of the Lenten season is to prepare people for the Sacrament of Baptism at Easter.

This year at St. Mark's we will once again have baptisms at the Easter Vigil, April 7 at 6:30 pm. Both adults and children may be baptized at this great celebration. The beauty of being baptized at the Easter Vigil is that one may receive their first communion at the first high mass of the Easter season.

Baptisms may also occur throughout the Easter season, but it is also especially appropriate to have baptisms on the fiftieth day of Easter, the Day of Pentecost (Whitsunday). Pentecost Day celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the early church, and the day is sometimes referred to as the church's birthday.

Please speak with the rector for more information about being baptized at St. Mark's.
