Baptism & Talents

The Baptism of ChristThis past Sunday for our catechumenate session we used the Gospel from the mass as our launching point for a discussion about baptism, and how through baptism God bestows upon all of us every talent and gift we need for our role in the church. None of us is without talents or gifts. God grants talents to all of us abundantly, and it is in Baptism that these talents are received.
Furthermore, we must share our talents. Just like the Gospel reading we heard, we must invest our talents in each other so that they might grow exponentially. To bury the gifts that God gives us in baptism is a great tragedy.
Our conversation about Baptism will continue next week, discussing how baptisms are always public events in which those being baptized and those who are already baptized enter into a covenant relationship with each other. Through baptism, the Church grows to include others into the work that is outlined in the baptismal covenant of our BCP.
On another topic, the books for the catechumenate arrived today, so those will be given to participants this coming Sunday.
